1 · First, the two-permit reality
Turkey does not run a one-sticker system. Your student visa — issued in Pakistan — only gets you through the airport. The permission that lets you legally live in Turkey is the Student Residence Permit (İkamet İzni), applied for online after arrival, within 30 days. Every year, students mix these up and land in paperwork trouble in month one. So this checklist has two stages: Stage A (in Pakistan) and Stage B (in Turkey). Collect for both before you fly — most Stage B documents are Stage A documents reused.
2 · Stage A — the visa file, document by document
| # | Document | Exact specification | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Passport | Valid at least 60 days beyond your intended stay — realistically keep 18+ months | Short-validity passports stall the whole file |
| 2 | Visa application form | Completed via the online pre-application, printed, signed | Handwritten corrections on printouts get returned |
| 3 | Biometric photos | 2 recent photos, 5×5 cm, white background | Studios default to passport size — insist on 5×5 |
| 4 | Acceptance letter | Original university letter (programme, duration, fees) | Unconditional letter required — conditional offers don't carry the file |
| 5 | Academic documents | SSC/Matric, HSSC/Intermediate (and degree for PG): Board-issued, then the attestation chain below | Photocopies without the chain are decorative, not documents |
| 6 | Funds evidence | Sponsor's bank statements 3–6 months + signed sponsor affidavit; benchmark ≈ US$800 per month of your study period (indicative) | Sudden lump-sum deposits raise questions; steady balances read better |
| 7 | Accommodation proof | University dormitory letter, notarised rental contract, or host letter | Vague “hotel booking” for a 4-year degree invites refusal |
| 8 | Health/travel insurance | Covering your entire stated stay, valid in Turkey | Policies that end before the course does |
| 9 | Flight itinerary | A reserved round-trip itinerary — purchase is not required | Buying a full ticket before a visa decision |
| 10 | Police character certificate | Issued locally, MOFA-attested | Skipped because “nobody asked last year” — it's listed now |
| 11 | Polio vaccination certificate | Valid WHO-format certificate issued in Pakistan | The single most-forgotten item on Pakistani files |
| 12 | Family Registration Certificate (FRC) | NADRA-issued, current | Ordered late — NADRA processing eats a week |
| 13 | Fee payment receipt | Visa fee + centre charges paid at filing | — |
3 · The attestation chain (denklik trail) — the step agents “forget”
Your certificates mean nothing to a Turkish officer until they climb a five-step ladder:
| Step | Authority | For |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your education Board (BISE) / university | Verification of SSC/HSSC/degree |
| 2 | IBCC | Equivalence stamp for school certificates |
| 3 | HEC | Attestation of university degrees/transcripts (PG applicants) |
| 4 | MOFA Pakistan | Foreign-office attestation over all of the above |
| 5 | Turkish mission (Embassy/consulate or authorised centre) | Consular attestation; universities may additionally run denklik (equivalence) |
Budget 2–6 weeks and PKR 5,000–10,000 (indicative) for this chain, and start it the week you apply to universities — not after the acceptance letter. Path Plaza calendars this chain into every Turkey file on day one.
4 · The items nobody mentions (until it's late)
Three of the thirteen items above cause most last-minute panics, simply because they're Pakistan-specific and rarely advertised: the polio certificate (mandatory for travellers from Pakistan), the FRC (NADRA's family record — needed to show sponsor relationship), and the 5×5 cm photo size (standard Pakistani passport photos are rejected). All three are cheap and fast — if you know about them early.
5 · Funds evidence — honest expectations
Turkey does not demand an Ireland-style frozen €10,000 window. Guidance-level expectation is around US$800 per month of your study period (indicative benchmark), shown through a parent/sponsor's 3–6 months of stable statements, plus their signed affidavit and CNIC copy. Credibility beats size: a steady salaried account outperforms a fat account filled the week before filing. If your sponsor is self-employed, attach business proof; inconsistency between income story and balance is the quiet refusal trigger.

6 · Fees & timing (indicative, Aug 2026)
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa fee + centre charges | ≈ PKR 12,000–24,000 total | fee re-prices with exchange rates |
| Attestation chain | ≈ PKR 5,000–10,000 | per-document fees |
| Health/travel insurance (1 yr) | ≈ PKR 15,000–30,000 | full-stay coverage |
| Police certificate + polio + FRC | nominal (PKR hundreds–low thousands) | the delay, not the cost, is the risk |
| Pre-travel total | ≈ PKR 35,000–70,000 | excludes airfare (PKR ~95,000–160,000) |
| Processing | 2–6 weeks | seasonal; file 8–10 weeks pre-intake |
7 · Stage B — after you land: the İkamet file
Within 30 days of arrival:
- Student certificate from your university (issued at enrolment).
- e-İkamet online application at the DGMM portal → appointment at the provincial migration office (İl Göç İdaresi).
- Take: passport + copies, 4 biometric photos, address proof (dorm letter / notarised rent contract), your insurance, and a Turkish tax number (free, obtained first — you need it to pay fees).
- Pay the residence tax + card fee (≈ US$80–100 equivalent in TRY — the lira fee re-indexes yearly) through official payment channels; keep the receipt.
- Your İkamet card and YKN (foreigner ID number) follow — that number unlocks bank accounts, SIM contracts and dorm registration. Renew annually against enrolment; your attendance and results are read at renewal.
8 · Seven mistakes that sink Turkish student files
| # | Mistake |
|---|---|
| 1 | Applying inside the last 4 weeks — the calendar, not the officer, refuses you. |
| 2 | Standard passport-size photos instead of 5×5 cm. |
| 3 | No polio certificate, or an expired one. |
| 4 | Certificates attested by the Board but never by MOFA/the Turkish mission. |
| 5 | Insurance that ends before the course dates. |
| 6 | A sponsor balance inflated by one giant deposit last week. |
| 7 | Treating the İkamet as optional — it is the legal basis of your stay, on a 30-day clock. |

Frequently asked questions
How much bank statement do I need for a Turkey student visa from Pakistan?
Guidance benchmarks around US$800 per month of your study period, shown through 3–6 months of a sponsor's stable statements with a signed affidavit. Files are judged on credibility — steady balances beat sudden large deposits. (Indicative; verified at filing.)
Is the polio certificate really mandatory for Pakistani students?
Yes — travellers from Pakistan are required to carry a valid polio vaccination certificate, and it belongs in your visa file. It is cheap and quick in Pakistan; the only cost of skipping it is a stalled application.
Do my documents need Turkish translation?
English-language documents are broadly accepted along the attestation chain (Board → IBCC/HEC → MOFA → Turkish mission). Anything issued in Urdu must be professionally translated. Your university can also request equivalence (denklik) — start that chain weeks before your appointment.
What happens if I don't apply for the İkamet within 30 days?
You become unlawfully resident — which risks fines, removal, and future entry bans. The 30-day clock is real. We schedule clients' e-İkamet steps as part of the pre-departure brief so the appointment is booked within week one of arrival.
