UK Student Visa Financial Requirement: The 28-Day Rule and Sponsor Documents Explained

The UK student visa 28-day rule: how much money, whose account, the 31-day freshness rule, sponsor documents — and the mistake that gets files refused.

Direct answerWhat is the 28-day rule, exactly?

UK student visa maintenance money must sit in an acceptable account for 28 consecutive days without ever dropping below the required total — £1,529 per month in London, £1,171 outside, up to nine months, plus unpaid first-year tuition — and the statement’s closing date must be within 31 days of your application. One dip below the line breaks the evidence.

Lesson 1What does the 28-day rule actually say?

Three sentences carry the whole rule — read them as one unit:

  1. 28 consecutive days: the money must be in the account, at or above the required total, for 28 days in a row. The 28-day window ends on the closing date of the statement you submit.
  2. No dips: if the balance falls below the required total on any day inside the window, the evidence fails — even if it recovers, and even if the closing balance is healthy.
  3. 31-day freshness: that closing date must fall within 31 days of the date you submit and pay for the online application.

This is the single most common refusal trigger we prepare files against — and the most preventable. The rule punishes improvisation: money moved into an account "just before applying" simply has not existed long enough.

Lesson 2How much money are we actually talking about?

The arithmetic, worked plainly:

Your campusPer monthCapped atMaintenance total
London£1,5299 months£13,761
Outside London£1,1719 months£10,539

Then add any first-year course fees still unpaid as recorded on your CAS — the deposit you already paid reduces what you must still show. A worked example: outside London, £10,539 maintenance + £9,000 remaining tuition = £19,539 that must sit intact for the 28 days.

Rates per the UKVI financial rules updated May 2025 — checked 1 September 2026; re-verify on GOV.UK at filing. Your own number comes from your CAS, not from a guide.

Lesson 3Whose account can the money be in?

The acceptable sources, in plain terms:

  • Your own account — the simplest case: statement, no extra documents.
  • A parent or legal guardian’s account — allowed with two additions: written consent from the account holder and proof of the relationship (birth certificate or equivalent). Missing either is a classic, avoidable refusal.
  • An official financial sponsor — a government, an international scholarship body or an employer with a formal scheme: evidenced through your CAS or an official letter stating amount, duration and contact details.
  • An education loan — a loan letter dated within six months, with no release conditions beyond your UK study itself.

Lesson 4What document proves it — and what breaks it?

Acceptable evidence, per the guidance:

  • Bank statements — showing the account holder’s name, account number, the transaction history and running balance, ending with a closing balance within the 31-day window; or
  • An official bank letter — on letterhead, confirming the name, account, date, and that the required balance has been held continuously for at least 28 days.

What breaks otherwise-real money:

  • a single day’s balance below the required total;
  • a closing date older than 31 days when you apply;
  • unexplained large deposits inside the window — UKVI can and does verify with banks, and a sudden lump that appeared on day 3 invites questions;
  • formats UKVI cannot check — vague letters without account identifiers.

Evidence formats checked against GOV.UK, 1 September 2026.

Lesson 5How do you time the 28 days with your visa application?

The timing works as one machine — plan it backwards from your course start, forwards from nothing:

  1. CAS in hand — its unpaid-tuition figure fixes your required total.
  2. Consolidate funds — money moves into the final account, and the required total is reached.
  3. Day 1 of the 28 — the first day the full amount sits intact.
  4. Day 28+ — statement closes — get the statement generated after the full period has run.
  5. Apply within 31 days of that closing date — the six-month pre-course application window gives you room; see our visa process guide.

The classic self-inflicted failure: applying on day 20 "because the intake is close". The intake calendar is managed by starting the whole journey earlier — not by shortening a rule that does not bend.

Lesson 6What about loans, sponsors and accommodation offsets?

Three legitimate adjustments to the standard picture:

  • Education loans: a loan approval letter (dated within six months, releasing funds only for your UK study) substitutes for held cash — confirm the letter meets the format before relying on it.
  • Official sponsorship: where the sponsor covers maintenance, the sponsorship appears on your CAS or in an official letter; partial sponsorship means the remainder still follows the 28-day rule.
  • Accommodation offset: fees already paid directly to your university for accommodation can reduce the maintenance you must show — by a maximum of one month’s allowance (£1,529 London / £1,171 outside). The university’s payment record is the evidence.

And one non-adjustment: if you have held valid UK permission for 12+ months, different evidence rules can apply — an edge case we check, not a strategy to build around.

Your maintenance funds — £1,529/month in London or £1,171 outside, up to nine months, plus unpaid first-year tuition — must sit in an acceptable account for 28 consecutive days without the balance ever dropping below the required total, and your statement’s closing date must be within 31 days of your application.

Enough to show the full required total: £13,761 maintenance for London or £10,539 outside (the 9-month caps) plus any unpaid first-year tuition from your CAS. The statement must show name, account number, transactions and running balance across the whole 28-day period.

Your own, or a parent’s/legal guardian’s — the latter needs written consent from the account holder and proof of relationship. Official financial sponsors and compliant education loan letters are also accepted. Friends’, uncles’ and employers’ accounts are not, outside official sponsorship.

Not with his own bank statement under the standard rules — acceptable accounts are yours or a parent’s/legal guardian’s, or an official financial sponsor. Families usually route a relative’s support through the parents’ account early enough for the 28 days to run cleanly; we check the right structure on every file.

The evidence fails — the rule requires the full total every single day of the window, and a recovery later does not repair it. The practical fix is timing: restart the 28-day clock and apply after a clean period has completed.

Yes, if it is an official letter on bank letterhead confirming your name, account number, the date, and that the required balance has been held continuously for at least 28 days. Vague letters without account identifiers do not meet the format.
