Direct answerHow does the UK student visa actually work from Pakistan?
You apply online after your university issues a CAS, attend biometrics at a visa application centre in Pakistan, and receive a decision — UKVI’s published standard is three weeks, fifteen working days, from biometrics. Approval rests with UK Visas and Immigration: no agent can promise an outcome, a date, or a shortcut.
Lesson 1What are the stages, in order?
Split the journey into what you control and what the system controls:
- Offer (yours to earn): apply to universities, meet their conditions, receive a firm offer.
- Deposit (yours): pay where the university requires it — amounts and refund rules vary by university.
- CAS (university’s): the university creates your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies on its sponsor licence.
- Visa application (yours): complete the online form, pay the visa fee and the immigration health surcharge.
- Biometrics (appointment system’s): attend the visa application centre in Pakistan.
- Decision (UKVI’s): an entry clearance officer assesses your file.
- Travel (yours) — only after the decision.
Lesson 2What does the CAS have to do with the visa?
Without a CAS there is no student visa application — the two are inseparable. The CAS records your course, its dates, tuition and payments made, and the university’s sponsor licence details. When you complete the visa form, you quote the CAS number; UKVI checks the record directly with the university.
Three practical rules:
- Check every field against your passport the day you receive the CAS statement — name spelling, date of birth, course title, dates.
- Errors are the university’s to fix, and must be fixed before you apply, not explained in a cover letter.
- A CAS is not a visa promise — it is the university saying "we will sponsor you"; the decision still belongs to UKVI.
We explain the whole CAS life-cycle in our CAS guide.
Lesson 3Which documents do you prepare?
The document set, by category:
- Identity: current passport (valid for the whole planned stay).
- Sponsorship: your CAS number and statement.
- Financial evidence: maintenance funds held in the required format for the required period — see our 28-day rule guide; this is the category most files fail.
- Health: a tuberculosis test certificate from a clinic approved for Pakistani applicants — unapproved clinics are not accepted.
- Academics: certificates and transcripts as attested as your universities require.
- English: whatever your CAS records — your SELT result or the university’s own assessment.
UKVI can ask for more, verify anything with third parties, and interview you. A complete, honest, consistent file is the strategy — there is no magic extra document.

Lesson 4How long does it really take?
The honest timing framework, as published on GOV.UK:
| Service | Published standard | Honest note |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (from outside the UK) | 3 weeks — 15 working days from biometrics | The clock starts at your appointment, not when you pay |
| Priority | 5 working days from biometrics | Paid extra; limited slots, can sell out in peak season |
| Super priority | End of next working day | Where offered; same limits |
| In-country extension/switch | 8 weeks | Applies inside the UK, not from Pakistan |
Three cautions we give every family: the standard is a service target, not a guarantee; July–September is peak and end-to-end time stretches; and interviews or document checks add their own time. You may apply up to six months before your course starts — early applications carry the most buffer.
Service standards checked against GOV.UK, 1 September 2026 — verify before you book anything.
Lesson 5What does a backward planning calendar look like?
Backward from a late-September course start:
| When | Milestone | Who controls it |
|---|---|---|
| September–December (year before) | Shortlist, IELTS, submit applications | You |
| January–March | Offers, firm acceptance, deposit | Mostly you |
| April–June | CAS issued; start holding maintenance funds | University; you hold funds |
| June–July | Complete the 28-day funds period, TB test, apply, biometrics | You + appointment system |
| July–August | Decision within the 3-week standard | UKVI |
| August–September | Travel, arrival, enrolment | You |
January intakes compress the same sequence — see our January 2027 guide for that calendar. The principle never changes: fix the course start date, then plan backwards.
Lesson 6What actually gets applications refused?
The refusal patterns we prepare files against:
- Financial evidence problems — funds not held for the required continuous period, wrong format, unexplained deposits, sponsor relationship not evidenced. The most common failure, and the most preventable.
- Inconsistencies — a name spelled one way on the passport and another on the CAS; course details that don’t match.
- Credibility doubts — an applicant who cannot explain their course choice, progression or funding in the credibility interview.
- Genuine document doubts — the fastest route to a ban, not just a refusal.
After a refusal there is a reapplication route, but the better strategy is preparation: that is what our paid Study Abroad Roadmap exists for — while remembering every decision belongs to UKVI, and no honest consultant can guarantee one.

UKVI’s published standard for applications from outside the UK is three weeks — 15 working days — starting from your biometrics appointment, not from payment. Priority (5 working days) and super priority (next working day) options exist where available. Peak season stretches real timelines, so apply early inside the six-month window.
The core set: passport, CAS number, financial evidence meeting the maintenance rules, a TB test certificate from an approved clinic, and the academic and English evidence your CAS records. UKVI can request more and verify anything — the strategy is a complete, consistent, honest file.
Yes — no agent or consultant can guarantee an outcome. Common refusal causes are financial evidence that doesn’t meet the format, inconsistencies between documents and the CAS, and credibility concerns. Most of these are preventable with disciplined preparation.
From outside the UK you can apply up to six months before your course start date. Earlier applications within that window carry the most buffer for appointments, the funds-holding period and the decision.
No. Book after the decision, or use fully flexible fares if you must book earlier. A "probably fine" visa is not a reason an airline accepts for a refund.
Yes — Pakistani applicants need a tuberculosis test certificate from a clinic approved by UKVI. Clinics not on the approved list are not accepted, and certificates have a validity window, so timing matters.
