UK Study Costs from Pakistan: The 6 Categories Every Family Should Plan

Lesson 1Why is one total number the wrong way to plan?

Two families can pay wildly different totals for the same degree, honestly. One student lives in London on a high-rent contract; another studies in a cheaper northern city. One course charges lab-heavy science fees; another charges arts fees. One family books flights late; another buys in a sale.

That is why the one-number answers floating around social media — "UK ka total kharcha X lakh hai" — mislead families. The disciplined method is the six-category budget below. When a Path Plaza client says "we have this much", we test it against these six categories, never against a rumoured total.

Lesson 2What does tuition actually depend on?

Tuition varies along three axes, so treat it as a range until you have shortlisted:

• The university — each sets its own fee per course, and they differ sharply.
• The subject — medicine and dentistry sit at the top; laboratory sciences and business above average; arts, humanities and some social sciences below.
• The level — master’s fees are for the one-year programme, which is exactly how the UK’s structure saves you a second year of living costs.

The honest rule we work by: no tuition figure enters a family’s plan until it has been read on the university’s own course page, with the screenshot date noted. Fees change between cycles; a cousin’s fee letter from two years ago is not a source.

Lesson 3What will you live on — and why is London a different plan?

Here is a rare case where the number is official and checkable — the maintenance requirement the visa rules themselves impose:

Read that correctly: this is the minimum you must show for the visa, on top of any unpaid first-year tuition — and real monthly spending is a different question again, driven by rent, city and lifestyle. The structural lesson is simpler: a London plan needs a materially bigger budget than an outside-London plan for the identical degree.

Lesson 4What do the visa and health surcharge cost?

Two payments families often leave out of the first draft of a budget:

• The visa application fee — paid once per application; the amount changed in April 2026, so we verify it on GOV.UK at filing rather than quoting from memory.
• The immigration health surcharge (IHS) — paid upfront with the application for the length of your permission; £776 per year under the current rate. It buys access to the NHS, and it is refunded only in defined cases (for example a refused application) — our IHS explainer covers the mechanics.

Add the smaller visa-stage costs: TB test, biometrics appointments travel, document copies, certified translations where needed. Individually small; together a category.

Lesson 5Which one-off costs do families forget?

The forgotten list, from real files:

• Before leaving: IELTS fee, TB test, IBCC/HEC/MOFA attestation, certified translations, passport renewals, university application and deposit payments, UCAS fee where applicable.
• Arrival month: accommodation deposit and first rent, household and bedding setup, winter clothing, UK SIM, bank account opening requirements, initial transport.
• Ongoing small print: books and materials, society and gym memberships, travel home in emergencies.

None of these is large alone. Together — planned honestly — they are the difference between a calm first semester and a panicked phone call home in November.

Lesson 6How do you build the full plan — and the buffer?

The method, in order:

1. Tuition — verified from each shortlisted course page, not estimates.
2. Living — London or outside, decided consciously; start from the official maintenance floor and add your real lifestyle.
3. Visa and health — current GOV.UK amounts on the day you apply.
4. One-offs — the forgotten list above, written down.
5. Flights and arrival — priced, with travel booked after the visa decision.
