Stamp 2 or Stamp 2A: can you work while studying in Ireland?

Checked on 26 September 2026 · Path Plaza desk · re-checked every 30 days

Direct answer

Stamp 2 is the permission attached to a programme on the official eligible list, and it carries the work rights — casual employment within limits. Stamp 2A exists for courses not on that list and carries no access to the labour market whatsoever, whatever a consultant's brochure says. Confirm the programme — not the institution — on the list before accepting any offer.

01 · The sharpest distinction in Irish study

What is Stamp 2 and what is Stamp 2A? Does the difference matter?

Short answer

Before accepting any offer, confirm the specific programme appears on the eligible list. A course that leads to Stamp 2A is a different proposition entirely, whatever the marketing says.

It matters enormously, and the two stamps are more different than their names suggest. Stamp 2 is granted to students enrolled on a programme listed on the Interim List of Eligible Programmes — the official register the immigration service maintains — and it permits casual employment within limits. Stamp 2A is granted for full-time study on a course that is not on that list — certain short language programmes and some private provision — and it carries no access to the labour market whatsoever. Official sources state this plainly; this pillar simply repeats it.

Why does the distinction bite? Because two offers can look identical from Lahore — same city, similar fees, similar websites — and lead to permissions that differ on the single point most families care about. The student on Stamp 2 can take a job within the hour limits; the student on Stamp 2A cannot work at all, for anyone, at any wage. And because the stamp follows the programme, not the institution's reputation, the check is programme-specific: a well-known college can run one programme on the list and another off it.

The stamps, side by side — what each permits and what each forbids
PermissionWhat it isWork rightsThe watch-for
Stamp 2Full-time programme on the eligible listCasual employment: 20 hours a week in term, 40 in fixed holiday windowsEmployment only — no business, no self-employment

Stamp 1GGraduate permission after a qualifying awardFull-time with any employer, no sponsorship neededStill no self-employment — the 1G pillar covers it

The instruction that falls out of this is the one the desk gives before any deposit is paid: confirm the specific programme — its exact title, at award level — appears on the eligible list, and keep a dated screenshot of the listing. A course that leads to Stamp 2A is a different proposition entirely, whatever the marketing says, and the family that knows before accepting the offer has turned a refusal-stage discovery into a two-minute check.

02 · The calendar nobody reads closely enough

How many hours can I work on Stamp 2?

Short answer

The 40-hour periods are fixed calendar dates, not simply any time your university is not teaching. This is the misunderstanding most likely to cause an unintentional breach.

The headline numbers are consistent across official and secondary sources: 20 hours a week during term, and 40 hours a week only during the designated holiday periods — 1 June to 30 September, and 15 December to 15 January. Learn the second half of that sentence as carefully as the first, because the 40-hour windows are fixed calendar dates, not simply any time your university is not teaching.

Two clarifications from the official guidance matter just as much as the numbers. First, these are maximums in any given week — not an average to be balanced across time. A student who works 35 hours one week and five the next has breached the limit in the first week, whatever the fortnight's average says. Second, a student with two employers remains subject to the combined limit: the permission caps the person, not the payroll. Neither nuance is hidden; both are simply unread, and a university reading week or an examination break does not automatically permit 40 hours.

That last point is the one this desk underlines, because it is the misunderstanding most likely to cause an unintentional breach. A Pakistani student who has worked legally all autumn can breach in a single spring week by assuming a study break is a holiday window. The breach is not a fine — it is a visa condition, and it surfaces at the worst possible moment: at renewal, at the Stamp 1G application, or at the residence registration. Put the four fixed dates in the phone calendar the week of arrival, and the question never has to be guessed at.

03 · The rule that catches the capable

Can I freelance or run a small business on the side?

Short answer

Employment only, on both Stamp 2 and Stamp 1G. Freelance work, consultancy and any business of your own are outside the permission even if the income is small.

No — and the no is broader than most students expect. Official guidance states it clearly: a Stamp 2 holder must not engage in any other business or trade, and cannot be self-employed. That covers the freelance designer taking small clients, the developer with a side contract, the student selling online, the tutor advertising privately. It is not the size of the income that matters; it is the category of the activity. Employment means being paid by an employer under a contract of service — everything else is outside the permission.

One guide names this as the most common visa-condition breach among students, and it is worth asking why. It catches precisely the capable students — the ones with skills the market wants, the ones an app or a platform can connect to paying work in an afternoon. The rule does not care that the work is skilled, small, or honest; it cares that the permission says employment only. The family whose student plans to "top up" a part-time job with freelance income is planning a breach, however innocently.

And note the restriction does not end with study: it continues on Stamp 1G, where full-time employment with any employer is permitted but operating a business or being self-employed is not. The full picture of what 1G allows — and it allows a great deal — is on the Stamp 1G pillar. The line running through both permissions is the same: work for employers, within the stated limits, and keep the entrepreneurship for a permission that allows it.

04 · The two items that make work legal

What do I need before an employer can legally pay me?

Short answer

The residence card and the public service number, in that order, before any work. Start both in your first fortnight because neither is instant.

Two items recur in every account of starting work in Ireland, and official material states the rule bluntly: you are only permitted to work if you hold both. The first is a valid Irish Residence Permit card — the registration card that shows your Stamp 2 permission. The second is a Personal Public Service number, the personal number the Irish state uses across employment, tax and services, without which an employer cannot put you on a legal payroll.

Neither is instant, which is why the sequencing advice exists: start both in your first fortnight. The residence registration follows arrival and depends on appointment availability in your city; the public service number has its own application process, and guidance advises applying for it within the first few weeks of arrival precisely because the processing time is not yours to control. The student who treats both as "admin to do later" loses the earliest earning weeks — often the quietest ones in the semester — and starts the year borrowing against the months when the hour limits are tighter.

The desk's arrival checklist for a Stamp 2 student, in order: register the permission, apply for the number, then look for work with both in hand. An employer who offers to start you "without the paperwork" is offering to make you an undocumented worker on your first week in the country — and the consequences of that land on the student, not the employer. The same discipline applies to everything on this page: the work rights are real, they are generous within their limits, and they belong to the student who reads the limits once, at the start, in writing.

05 · The arithmetic, said out loud

How much can I realistically earn part time?

Short answer

Term-time earnings at the legal limit will cover rent and not much beyond it, and only if you find work. Never plan tuition against part-time income.

Start with the wage, verified: the national minimum wage for 2026 is €14.15 an hour for experienced adult workers, from 1 January 2026, per the official wage authority — sources quote differently because older rates circulate, and this page carries the checked date beside the figure. At that rate, twenty hours a week is roughly €283 a week, or about €1,134 a month gross during term — before tax and deductions, and only at the full legal limit, which no student should plan to hit every single week alongside a masters.

Set that against the rent bands on the accommodation pillar: a room in a shared flat at €600 to €800. The arithmetic is tight and honest: term-time earnings at the legal limit cover the room and not much beyond it — and only if you find work, which is its own condition. One commenter states flatly that a part-time job will not be found easily, and that €2,000 a month is the realistic requirement for living comfortably. Finding a job is a real hurdle in a city full of students chasing the same twenty legal hours; the family that budgets as though the first month's income is zero has planned correctly.

Which produces the rule the desk states at the first meeting, in writing: never plan tuition against part-time income. Tuition is paid by the family, from savings or a documented loan — the money pillar covers how it must sit in the file. Part-time earnings are a margin that makes the year livable: groceries, transport, the occasional night out. The students who describe Ireland working are the ones whose families funded the plan and whose jobs topped it up; the students who describe Ireland failing are, too often, the ones who were sold a plan where the job paid for it.
