CAS Explained: What It Is, When You Get It, and What Can Go Wrong

Lesson 1What is a CAS, technically?

Every UK university allowed to enrol international students holds a student sponsor licence. When it firmly accepts you, it uses that licence to assign you a CAS — a unique reference number attached to a record holding your personal details, your course, its dates, tuition, payments made and how your English was assessed.

What you actually receive is a CAS statement (often emailed as a PDF) showing what the university has recorded. The visa form asks for the CAS reference; UKVI reads the record directly from the sponsor system. That is why a typo you can see on the statement is a typo UKVI will also see.

Lesson 2When do you actually get it?

The sequence before a CAS, in plain terms:

1. Offer — conditional or unconditional, from the university.
2. Conditions met — final transcripts, English evidence, references, whatever the offer listed.
3. Deposit — where the university requires one, paid per its instructions.
4. CAS request — some universities issue automatically; others wait for you to request it through their applicant portal.

How long the deposit-to-CAS step takes varies by university and season — days to weeks. The honest planning rule: treat the CAS as the gate. Nothing in the visa stage can start before it, so chase the university (not the visa centre) while you wait.

Lesson 3What must the CAS contain — and what do you check?

A CAS-checking ritual, the same one we run on client files:

• Name — exactly as in the passport, including spelling and spacing.
• Date of birth — an easy typo, an expensive one.
• Course title and level — the exact award and level you intend to study.
• Course dates — start and end; these drive your visa length.
• Tuition and payments — the deposit you paid should be reflected; errors here affect how much maintenance evidence you must show.
• English assessment — how the university recorded your English (SELT result or its own assessment).
• Sponsor licence number — present and matching a licensed sponsor.

Print it, read it against the passport line by line, and ask the university to correct anything wrong before the visa application. Universities fix CAS errors routinely — but only before you apply on the flawed record.

Lesson 4What can go wrong with a CAS?

The failure patterns, honestly:

• Detail errors — any field that doesn’t match reality. Fix: the university amends the record; you wait for the corrected statement.
• Deposit not reflected — you paid, the record says you didn’t. This distorts your financial evidence. Fix before applying.
• CAS withdrawn — universities can withdraw sponsorship (missed conditions, non-enrolment, changed plans). A withdrawn CAS cannot be used for a visa application.
• CAS expired or superseded — records have validity windows around your course dates; deferrals usually mean a new CAS.
• Changed your university? — one CAS supports one visa application for one sponsor. Switching universities means a fresh CAS and a fresh application.

Lesson 5What comes after the CAS?

The CAS is the middle of the journey, not the end:

• Funds — hold the maintenance money in the required format for the required continuous period (our 28-day rule guide covers this in detail).
• TB test — from an approved clinic, inside its validity window.
• Application — online form, visa fee, health surcharge, CAS number quoted.
• Biometrics — appointment at the visa application centre in Pakistan.
• Decision — UKVI’s published standard is three weeks from biometrics; treat it as a planning number, not a promise.

One rule keeps this whole stage calm: nothing is booked until the decision is in the passport.
